Brief History of the Firm |
Since its founding in 1853, the firm has obtained patents for many famous inventors. Included among them are Sharps in 1873 for his breech-loading rifle, Graf Zeppellin in 1899 for his blimp, and Woodland in 1952 for his product identification system (now widely known as the "bar code"). One of the firm's best known trademarks is SLINKYŽ which is the name given to the famous toy in 1946 by Betty M. James, wife of its Philadelphia inventor.

Howson & Howson currently issues more than 100 U.S. patents (and scores of trademarks) per year on average. In recent years, the firm has obtained industry significant patents on the propeller coupling mechanism for the V-22 Osprey aircraft; on the autoclavable, non-lubricated high speed dental handpiece; and on the first commercially successful hot-fillable plastic grip bottle.
